Winter Development Academy FAQs
How does indoor field hockey differ from outdoor?
Indoor field hockey is a fast-paced game and allows each player to have more touches on the ball. It is a very different game than the outdoor version, and is an excellent way to improve stick skills. All play is on indoor court surface. You may not drive the ball, only pushes or deflections. The ball may not be put in the air except on goal. Games are 6v6, 5 “field” players and a goalie.
Do I need to tryout?
No, there are no tryouts for the Academy program. Simply register here!
How is the Academy different from Club?
This program is for girls looking to learn the sport or to improve their field hockey skills without the commitment of weekly traveling to tournaments. Players will receive the same high-level coaching as our other teams, but do not travel to competitions. For more information on our levels of play, check out our indoor information sheet.
What equipment do I need to play?
You need an indoor field hockey stick, a left hand glove, shinguards, a mouthguard, and sneakers. Indoor gear is available at discounted prices at our STX Store or through Harrow. Flyers for equipment will be distributed once 2016 lines of sticks/gear become available.
When/where are practices?
We run two sessions for Academy: one on Saturdays, the other on Sundays. Saturday practices are from 9-11am and Sunday practices are from 2-4pm. Saturday clinics are for 3rd-10th graders (split up by age and skill level during the practices). Sundays are for 6th-10th graders. They are both held at the National Cathedral School at 3490 Woodley Rd. NW Washington, DC 20016. All practice dates and times will be up on our master calendar once the schedule is finalized.
Do I need to have field hockey experience?
No! We accept any level of play into our Academy program. Players will be divided up by age and skill level. We would love for beginners to come out to learn the game. We also welcome intermediate and advanced players who want to work on their skills during the winter.
Do I have to attend every session?
We do not have a strict attendance policy. However, the more you can play, the more your skills can development. Therefore, we recommend you attend as many sessions as possible.
If I can’t make my Saturday session, can I attend Sunday? Or vice versa?
This will be handled on a weekly basis. If we know we have the space ahead of time, we will be able to accommodate. However, there are restrictions on how many people we can have in the building at a time, so we can’t make any guarantees.
What is your refund policy?
More than 30 days before an event begins, we offer a full refund minus a $10 + 4% credit card cancellation fee. 30 days before an event, we only offer credit for a future event minus a $10 + 4% credit card cancellation fee. 1 week before an event, we do not offer refunds except in the case of injury. If an event has begun and you do not complete the event or season, no refund will be issued.
