Come Tryout for Storm Winter Season!
When: Two Dates: Sunday, October 29, November 19th
Where: National Cathedral School
Southeast Storm is our partner club, run and managed by Jane DeGrenier. If players are selected for club they will be expected to attend a December placement practice and commit to the schedule for the season as well as the fees associated with play. Scholarships are available for select athletes demonstrating need. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Storm will hold tryouts for every age level at the beginning of each season. These tryouts are designed to evaluate players and ensure that they are ready for club. Team decisions will be made by the Director of Coaching and the Storm coaching staff after overall club tryouts in the beginning of the season. Players are continually evaluated during the course of the field hockey season and if deemed in the best interest of the player and the team, a coach may request to the director to transfer a player midseason to a higher or lower level team. If a player leaves the club or doesn’t participate in a season, they must tryout again as we do not “save spots.”
All players must tryout at the age appropriate level. Age groups are determined by the age of the player on Jan. 1st. For example, if you are going to try out in November for our winter programs – look at the age you will be on Jan. 1st, 2017. If you are 13, you can play U14. If you are 14, you will play U16. If you are 16, 17, or 18, you will play U19.
Team Formation and Commitment
Team assignments are made by the Director and Storm coaches. Selections are based upon skill level, capabilities, and space. The club is committed to ensuring that the team assignment is age appropriate. However, the Club reserves the right to assign individual players to teams that are not age appropriate, but better fit with the player’s skill level and capabilities. The club also reserves the right to assign players to teams to ensure that there are enough players to field a team at a particular age group, as long as the assignment does not negatively impact the player’s development.
There are 4 levels of play with different commitments.
Development Academy – For the winter of 2017 we are NOT running a development program at NCS. There will only be two sessions of development available in Sterling, VA. Find out more HERE.
Training Academy: Players are placed with teams and given 1-2 play day opportunities. You are expected to make most practices so we can have full games at every practice and so you get the most out of your experience. Please communicate with our staff in a timely manner concerning absences.
Club: You are expected to make all but 2 practices and all assigned tournaments, typically 4 per season. Any absences must be communicated at the beginning of the season. Last minute cancellations will not be tolerated except in cases of illness or injury.
Elite: You are expected to make all but 2 practices and all assigned tournaments, typically 5-6 plus an expectation to attend national recruiting tournaments. Any absences must be communicated at the beginning of the season. Last minute cancellations will not be tolerated except in cases of illness or injury.
Realize that we have more who want to play club and travel than we can accommodate. If you are selected, please make sure you are committed.
Cost varies based upon the number of tournaments you participate in. Single day tournaments typically run around $60 per tournament. Seasonal practice fees are $220 in the fall and spring, and $450 in the winter (our rental costs are MUCH higher in the winter). National, overnight tournaments run from $200 to $500, depending on the number of days, location, etc.
All players must also be a member of USA field hockey. Those in our elite teams also participate in our recruiting platform, which is approx $200 p/year.
Please note, we know that club is expensive, but we would NEVER want to turn away a talented individual or deny them the opportunity to play and possibly play in college due to finances. If cost is an issue for your family, please speak to us about scholarship opportunities.
Selection of tournaments will be done by the director and will be based upon team development needs, variety of competition, cost, etc. We will also take into account the input from our players and parents regarding their schedules, tournaments they have liked/disliked, recruiting opportunities, etc. Decisions to participate in additional tournaments are at the discretion of the individual teams.
Playing Time and Practice Attendance
Southeast Storm Club does not have a policy on equal playing time for all players on a team. Playing time is determined by several factors including: attendance at practices and games; attitude at practices and games; and playing ability. However, Southeast Storm encourages all coaches to substitute so that all registered players have some playing time.
Training is MANDATORY. If training is missed a player can make it up with another team ONLY with the approval of their coach and the other team’s coach. With that being said, some seasons have a less strict attendance policy. During the fall, we understand that players have high school commitments as well. Although we encourage you to make as many practices as possible, some absences will be allowed. Too many missed practices, even when excused, can cause a coach to ask a player to leave the club or move to a different team. Despite your situation, the emphasis is on communication between the player and their coach.
Grievances or complaints about team matters should be directed to the head coach and, if possible, resolved at the team level. If the matter cannot be resolved at the team level, the head coach should present the grievance or complaint to the Club Director. Grievances or complaints about the coach should be communicated directly to the Club Director. All grievances or complaints given to the Director of Coaching will be reviewed.
