Will my daughter fit in if she has played a lot of hockey since you will have 3rd graders without any experience?
Yes. We split players up by experience. There will be 6 different groups, all with a different field hockey curriculum. We have coaches that work with older girls on high level skills and other coaches with experience working with younger girls to expose them to the skills they need, but make it fun!
If you have never touched a stick, you won’t be playing against varsity athletes, if you have six years of experience, you’ll only see the younger players at lunch time.
All groups will be together during lunch and leadership workshops though before breaking up with their teams.
Can my daughter come even if she has never played?
Yes! If your daughter has played lots of soccer or other field sports, she will be more than fine coming all day.
If your daughter is below the 6th grade, we recommend she sign up for our multi-sport camp at the Potomac School.
What happens in the “Learning to Lead’ Sessions?
We realize it is the summer and perhaps the thought of classroom time sounds boring, but this is camp classroom time, WAY DIFFERENT! We make sure the players are interactive and begin to think about how their own personality effects their game. All players take a DiSC assessment, a quick 20 questionnaire which helps shed light onto where you fit into 4 different styles of behavior that we use as a tool to understanding others and ourselves.
After we learn how to use DiSC on ourselves, the sessions help girls think about where their teammates might sit within this framework. All girls have been or will be on a team where “girl drama” can get in the way of success, and our “Learning to Lead” sessions give our players a way to overcome team conflict and learn to lead in a style that suits them.
Finally, we finish up working on how to set and achieve goals as an individual and as a team, where every player fills out their own summer goals. We believe that leaders are made not born at Beyond Sticks, but without the skills you think only traditional leadership styles can be effective. The best place for any girl to start asserting herself, gain confidence, and learn to lead is on the field. We believe teaching this skill in a uniform way helps all our players take their leadership beyond the game.
Finally, we do this through interactive games, interspersed with activities that get girls up and moving, dancing and cheering!
What’s for lunch?
For an additional cost, we can provide lunch. Otherwise we recommend you bring a lunch to all our camps.
Will there be anything available after 3 pm or before 9 am?
YES! For all camps at the Potomac School, you can sign up separately for pre or post camp activities. During our camp at American University, you are able to drop off starting at 8:15 on the field, where supervision will be available, but not specific activities. Pick up begins at 3:00 and ends at 4:00 during the June 24-28th camp.
Will I be able to be recommended for Futures?
Yes, as a USA Field Hockey endorsed camp, coaches are able to recommend high performing players for futures. No need for testing, we can recommend a few select players after camp.
Will attending camp help me make my junior high or high school team?
Undoubtable, the more you play over the summer the better. As Beyond Sticks camps are in June, they will help you see how much work you need to do before team camp or tryouts in August. Our last camp in August would be a great way to get yourself in preseason shape before preseason (but undoubtably more fun as we don’t make you sprint!). Every camper gets a summer training regime, based on college level workouts, so you will be in shape. Also, the feedback you receive in camp will give you the tools go work hard this summer and make an impact next fall.
Are goalkeepers invited?
Yes! We have a coach specifically hired to work with keepers! Keepers learn a ton by getting to defend against our top level coaches.
Can we come as a team?
A 10% team discount is available and it would be a great way for new captains to get an entire team on the same page for summer training and set team goals for the next year.
