This winter,we have 104 players in our Saturday and Sunday Development Academy. As we grow our academy, we grow as well-learning how to give players more feedback and have more fun every session. We look forward to more outdoor fun at both of our locations, The Potomac School in McLean and St Stephens in Alexandria this spring! You can even sign up NOW!
Southeast Storm Fall Wrap Up & Winter Kick off!
As our club moved to a more year round model, we had 102 athletes play with us this fall! Most of our athletes were playing at least 6 days of field hockey a week between their high school and
club teams… and never complaining! We had a newly formed U12 team that did great and we look forward to their growth this year. Our U16 and U19 White and Blue teams survived their busy schedules and participated in one tournament at the end of the season. Our U19 Red finished off the season 3-2 at Shooting Star in Richmond, VA, while our U16 Red team rocked Festival in California in a tough pool with a final record of 2-3-1.
This winter is in full swing with 136 players on our 9 teams. Just this past weekend, our U16 Red team qualified for the Indoor National Team! Congrats to Coach Bailey for her great coaching and the team for their top-notch play!
NFHCA Top Recruit Tournament Team Goes Undefeated!
15 players went down to Naples Florida for the first Top Recruit Tournament. A mix of players from several Storm teams rocked it, with over 50 college coaches in attending their games and the team finishing 1st in the Open Division! Congratulations girls on an amazing (and muddy) showing!
The Loudoun County League, per usual, had an amazing fall season. Check out this article to see some highlights, the champions, and the all-stars.
Our winter club players and parents participated in the “Triple Impact Competitor” and “TheSecond Goal Parent” Seminars on December 6th. We asked players and parents what their biggest takeaways were from these sessions. Click here to read more. Thank you so much to Chloe, Emma, Victoria, and Cindy for their responses and to all players and parents who attended the sessions.

Player Interview with JoJo Young
Erin: What is one piece of advice you would give younger players?
JoJo: Really appreciate every chance you get to be on the field with your team. As a senior, it’s becoming more and more real that my time on this team is coming to and end, and that’s really sad! So just remember that every practice and every game is special.

Coach Jane Honored with Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Coach Jane Degrenier for her induction into the Ithaca College Athletics Hall of Fame. Her 1982 team was inducted as a “Team of Distinction” this past fall. The 1982 field hockey team established Ithaca’s tradition of excellence with the school’s first-ever women’s national championship. Hall of Fame coach Doris Kostrinsky guided the Bombers to an 18-3 record, which is the second-most victories in a season. The National Championship was hosted in Elizabethtown, Pa., and Ithaca defeated Trenton State, 2-1, on penalty strokes. Ithaca beat eight colleges that are now NCAA Division I institutions and three DII schools during the campaign. The ’82 team still holds the school record for goals in a season with 103.

What’s Happening This Spring?
Beyond Sticks Spring Development Academy
We are happy to be back outside in the (indecisive) spring weather playing field hockey! With over 120 participants and counting working on their skills at our two sites at the Potomac School in McLean and the St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, we couldn’t be more excited to get back to work teaching new players and growing the game of the more experienced players. In order to ensure high quality programing, we are still having our super fun high school coaches help with our younger players, but ensuring only current High School coaches work with our high school players. This is a change from the winter and moving forward we look forward to really pushing our older and more seasoned players to ensure they are ready to impress come preseason!
Southeast Storm Spring Club Season
Our 10 teams and 140+ players are ready to take to the turf this spring season. Teams will practice each weekend at the Potomac School and participate in various 7v7 tournaments at colleges and field houses in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. The spring season also includes the Junior Premier Outdoor League, or JPOL, which is a season long tournament against top clubs for our U19 Elite team. Lastly, Southeast Storm will be sending a team to the Top Recruit college showcase in Richmond in mid May. With so much to look forward to, our coaches and teams can’t wait to get started!
Loudoun County League Spring Season
Practices and games have started up again for the Loudoun County League operating out of the Evergreen Sportsplex in Leesburg. Thirteen teams and over 340 players and coaches will take to the fields each week. Our beginner/intermediate, goalie, and elite clinics have also resumed on Tuesday nights at Evergreen. Players looking for extra practice each week will join our coaching staff to learn new skills, perfect current techniques, and push themselves to become better players. You can see the full schedule, a list of coaches, and information on how to help on the LCL page.
Beyond Sticks Development Academy
Over 100 athletes participated in the Beyond Sticks Development Academy program this winter at the National Cathedral School on Saturdays and Sundays. In our first year of having 3rd-5th graders in our programs has been really fun as we learn to continue to push our older players and build specific lesson plans for our younger players to the game. Our coaching staff was very impressed and proud of the progress made by every player. Not only did these athletes grow their games immensely, they also learned to play beyond the game with our PCA Cool Down cards. Way to go winter Academy athletes!
Beyond Sticks Clinics @ Dulles
Beyond Sticks could not be prouder of our inaugural programs at the Dulles Sportsplex this winter. From the first clinics with Olympians and Georgetown Coaches to our 8 week Clinics @ Dulles, about 120 athletes took to the indoor turf this winter to continue to work on their outdoor game. Between perfecting the basics of dribbling, passing, and driving and learning new skills such as the lift, pop shot, aerial, and no look pass, these players grew and prepared for their spring seasons. We are excited to expand opportunities for development in Dulles next year to accommodate the waitlist!
Southeast Storm Club Teams
Over 130 players participated in our partner club, Southeast Storm, this winter . These teams each played in anywhere from 4-6 tournaments traveling to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and within Virginia. The coaches were all very proud of how their teams learned
to play together and grow their indoor skills. Storm carries larger rosters in the winter so the teams can stay together and transition to outdoor play as a unit. We look forward to keeping our club size the same, but integrating new players and new policies to ensure even more success in the spring.
Special congratulations to our U14 and U16 Red teams for their play at their respective National Indoor Tournaments!
Coach Jane Wins PCA Double-Goal Coach Award
Congratulations to Coach Jane DeGrenier for being selected for the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Double Goal Coach Award. Coach Jane was one of fifty selections out of2,400 nominations! We are so proud of Jane and so thankful for everything she does for our players and sport. Check out this press release from the National Cathedral School, the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Facebook post, and this article from PCA to learn more about what it means to be a Double-Goal Coach.
Field Hockey in Loudoun County Schools
At the School Board meeting of March 8th, we asked the board to revisit their vote of February 3rd to designate field hockey as a Tier 2 sport. The Board of Supervisors is unlikely to fully fund the School Board’s budget, and accordingly there will be little chance of convincing school board members to allocate funds to field hockey in the fall of 2016. Still, we are asking the field hockey community to reach out their respective Supervisors on the Board of Supervisors, and advocate for fully funding the School Board’s proposed budget to give us a chance at further advocacy before the School Board. Check out this page for more information regarding Tier 2 and what you can do to help!

This winter, Beyond Sticks coaches distributed Play Beyond the Game Cool Down cards at our clinics and Development Academy. This cards are designed to educate our players about important Positive Coaching Alliance concepts, such as being a Triple-Impact Competitor, and to make them think about the ways to be an even better teammate.
